Ex-NRL Star Curtis Scott Walks Free from Court After Drunk Driving Charge

Former NRL young gun Curtis Scott has escaped conviction after appearing in a Sydney court for driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash. The 28-year-old former Melbourne Storm and Canberra Raiders centre crashed his ute into several trees in Bonnet Bay on June 15, 2024, before fleeing the scene.

The Incident and Arrest

Scott, who was over the legal limit at the time of the crash, was later arrested at his home and taken to Sutherland Hospital. He was issued with several court attendance notices six months later, in December. The former rugby league player appeared in the Sutherland Local Court on Thursday, dressed in a black suit, to face sentencing.

Guilty Plea and Sentencing

Scott’s solicitor, Paul McGirr, told the court that his client’s blood alcohol reading was at the lowest end of the middle range PCA, with a reading of 0.08. Scott initially faced charges of driving under the influence, mid-range PCA, and negligent driving, but two of the charges were withdrawn. He entered a guilty plea to mid-range PCA and was sentenced to an 18-month conditional release order without conviction.

Scott’s Road to Rehabilitation

According to McGirr, Scott has been working hard to get his life back on track since the incident, focusing on sanctioned fighting, which he is “very accomplished in.” The former rugby league player has also been addressing his alcohol consumption and undergoing psychological treatment. Judge Tania Johnson noted that while the collision occurred in a residential area and was detected by the public, Scott’s BAC reading was at the lower end of the mid-range, and he had good prospects of rehabilitation.

Reaction to the Verdict

Outside of court, McGirr expressed satisfaction with the result, stating that it was a “fair result” and that Scott had put in the hard work to rehabilitate. Scott’s licence was suspended after the incident, and he has been off the road for nearly a year. The former young gun has not played rugby league professionally since 2021 and has since pursued a career in combat sports, including boxing.
