City of Kamloops says response to $7M skating loop has been overwhelmingly popular (Kamloops)
Kamloops’ $7M Skating Loop Exceeds Expectations with Overwhelmingly Positive Response
The City of Kamloops’ newly opened $7-million skating loop in Riverside Park has been a massive hit, drawing in far more visitors than anticipated during its first winter season. According to Sherri Holmes, the city’s sport, recreation and wellness manager, the facility has been deemed “an overwhelming success.”
Rink Visitor Numbers Surpass Expectations
Okanagan Affordable Rentals, which set up shop next to the rink, recorded an impressive 3,600 customer transactions in just 43 days. This averages out to around 580 to 600 visitors per week, although actual numbers are believed to be significantly higher. Holmes noted that the company’s observations suggest the true number of visitors could be over three times higher than the recorded transactions.
A New Vibe at Riverside Park
The free skating loop, which opened in January, has brought a new level of activity and vibrancy to Riverside Park during the winter months. The facility, constructed with provincial grant funding, was designed to activate the park and provide a fun space for the community. With its barrier-free access, ambient lighting, seating, and fire pits, the skating loop has become a popular destination for both locals and visitors from other communities.
Future Plans and Improvements
While the skating loop has been a huge success, there are already plans in place to make improvements for future seasons. Holmes noted that ice maintenance staff were only on site from Wednesdays to Sundays, and the city is looking to increase the frequency of ice clearing and resurfacing. The city is also planning to review data on indoor drop-in skating programs and adjust programming as needed.
Summer Programming Possibilities
As the skating loop closes for the winter season, the city is already looking to the future and considering adding programming to the space during the summer months. Coun. Nancy Bepple suggested that dance programs could be a great fit for the area, and Holmes noted that the city is interested in observing how residents use the space and adding programs accordingly. With its newfound popularity, the skating loop is sure to remain a hub of activity in Kamloops for years to come.
